Exploring an Unusual Steam Game Trial: Playing as a Turdy Character on a Quest to Arrive at the Toilet

Steam Next Fest is now live, and players have found plenty of entertaining independent titles. Yet, one stands out for its offbeat concept. Titled Unko Technica, this old-school styled platformer lets you play a protagonist that is literally a turd trying to travel to a toilet. For those curious, "Unko" means "poop."

How you interact is simple: you only need a jump control. Across 150 challenges, battle mini-bosses and access a store to acquire skins for your dung hero.

Time your actions carefully, since one mistake requires starting over. Bounce using bubbles to launch your character upward, navigate fragile ledges, and interact with buttons to unlock new areas. Gather coins for buying challenging stages as the action intensifies.

Visually, the game boasts neon level designs and a killer music score. Its minimalist visual style with morphing geometric shapes evokes memories of players of classic titles like Earthbound.

While it's hard to think of similar titles where you control a dung character, gaming frequently included scatological themes. For example, in Death Stranding, players make throwables from character excrement. Games like Palworld and Ark: Survival Evolved employ manure as fertilizer. And of course, such content shows up heavily in the South Park RPG The Stick of Truth.

Regardless of its silly idea, Unko Technica has already garnered significant awards, including taking top honors at a major publisher's indie contest in 2023. A playable preview is available at present on Steam, with the full game scheduled to launch on computers in the fall.
